Ann McCaughey’s Background
Ann McCaughey began in the arts as a photographer, studied with Philippe Halsman and accepted commissions for portraits. She had studied art history and music at the University of Rochester and at Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence.
She took extensive classes with Jada Rowland in her Greenport studio beginning in 2004, and later with Annie Wildey, Amy Worth, Arelio Torres, Laura Stroh and Max Moran. She is a member of a sketch group which meets at the South Street Gallery in Greenport, and The East End Arts Council. Ann has exhibited at the South Street Gallery, the Cutchogue Library, the East End Arts Council, the Southold Historical Society, several vineyards, and has won 1st place prizes in three juried shows and two “best in shows”.
One comment about her oil portraits, from a writer: “There seems a duality in your art, clean and bright, yet stark and a Yankee somberness that must come from the light of the sea. Strong lines throughout, and yet the humanity and mortality of the seen as they see.” Another client said “You have an extraordinary gift for capturing the radiance and soul of a person and this jumps out of Dad’s portrait.”
She and her husband live in Cutchogue and New York City. Robert McCaughey teaches history at Barnard College. Their two children and four grandchildren live in Santa Fe, New Mexico and San Carlos, California.
